March Madness Recap: Texas' Sweet 16 Run & Oklahoma's Crown Final Appearance
As April brings the 2025-2026 college basketball postseason to a close, a look back at this year’s March Madness reveals that the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners walked entirely different but equally resilient paths, adding another fascinating chapter to this great rivalry.
The Longhorns’ Cinderella Story
Before the tournament began, few could have predicted that the Texas Longhorns, who barely squeezed into the bracket as an 11-seed, would become one of the most stunning stories of March.
The Longhorns’ path to the second weekend was nothing short of spectacular:
- First Four: A nail-biting 68-66 victory over a tough NC State squad to punch their ticket to the main bracket.
- Round of 64: A stunning 79-71 upset over 6-seed BYU.
- Round of 32: A hard-fought 74-68 win against traditional powerhouse and 3-seed Gonzaga.
Although their incredible run ended in the Sweet 16 with a heartbreaking 79-77 loss to eventual tournament favorite and 2-seed Purdue, the execution and clutch performance under pressure earned Texas national praise. For the Longhorns, it was a phenomenally successful end to the season.
The Sooners’ Snub and Crown Redemption
In stark contrast to Texas’ celebration, the Oklahoma Sooners faced the cruelest reality on Selection Sunday—they were named the “First Team Out” of the NCAA Tournament.
For a team that showed immense competitiveness throughout the regular season, missing the Big Dance was painful. However, the Sooners refused to let that define their postseason. They accepted an invitation to the inaugural 2026 College Basketball Crown and used it as a stage to prove themselves.
In the Crown tournament, Oklahoma showcased the caliber of play that belonged in the NCAA Tournament, battling all the way to the final. Though they fell just short in overtime, losing 89-82 to West Virginia in the championship game, they answered the selection committee’s doubts with undeniable effort on the court.
Looking Ahead
The 2026 basketball postseason saw Texas maximize its potential on the biggest stage, while Oklahoma demonstrated immense grit in the face of adversity. When these two teams meet again on the SEC hardwood next season, their contrasting spring experiences will undoubtedly fuel an even fiercer rivalry.
