Tate Sandell won the 2026 Red River Rivalry with a 47-yard field goal on the final play, lifting Oklahoma over Texas 27-24. His earlier 53-yarder had helped turn a ten-point halftime deficit into a one-possession game. Both kicks mattered in a contest that OU won by three.

The AP game report records the walk-off finish. The official box score puts it within an afternoon when Oklahoma scored through all three phases.

Sandell finished 2-for-3 on field goals and 3-for-3 on extra points. Those nine points include every Oklahoma point in the third quarter and the only score after Texas tied the game in the fourth. The sequence also preserves an important distinction: he missed an earlier long attempt before making two later kicks. A winning final attempt does not make the whole afternoon perfect.

Oklahoma’s final drive traveled 31 yards in 19 seconds. That distance left Sandell a 47-yard attempt rather than another kick from beyond 50. Field position on the last possession was part of the finish, even though the kicker supplied its most memorable action.

A blocked punt kept Oklahoma close

Dakoda Fields recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for Oklahoma’s first touchdown. That second-quarter score tied the game at seven without requiring a Sooner offensive scoring drive.

Later, Peyton Bowen’s 42-yard interception return supplied another touchdown outside the offense. These plays help explain why total offensive yardage alone gives an incomplete account of the result. Texas gained more yards, but Oklahoma created two touchdowns on plays its offense did not run.

Sandell’s kicks should be read within that team performance. The blocked punt prevented OU from reaching halftime scoreless, the defense produced a fourth-quarter lead, and the final offensive possession moved the ball into kicking range.

SEC recognition followed on October 12

The SEC’s weekly awards named Sandell among the special-teams honorees, alongside Kentucky’s Brock Coffman. Bowen earned defensive recognition. Oklahoma’s announcement confirms both Sooner selections.

That announcement identifies Sandell as the 2025 Lou Groza Award winner. The award is useful background for readers encountering him through the Texas finish; his October 10 contribution is measured by the kicks he made in this game.
