Texas and Oklahoma's 2026 Recruits: What Matters Before Red River
Recruiting rankings were useful when Texas and Oklahoma assembled their 2026 classes. With the teams due to meet at the Cotton Bowl on October 10, a better question is what those new players have actually done since arriving. A signing-day grade cannot tell us who will take a snap in Dallas.
The schools announced their incoming classes on December 3, 2025: Texas listed 23 newcomers, and Oklahoma announced 24 high-school signees. Those are signing-day snapshots, not a count of every player later added to either 2026 roster. They also do not measure game-week roles. This October checkpoint looks at a few named recruits whose official school profiles provide a clearer picture.
Texas: Cooper has the clearest game sample
Freshman running back Derrek Cooper has already appeared in three games, according to his Texas player profile. He had 11 carries for 44 yards and a touchdown against UTSA on September 19. At Tennessee a week later, he carried seven times for seven yards and caught one pass for six. Those outings show that Texas has used him in regular-season games, including an SEC road contest. They do not establish how many touches he will get against Oklahoma.
Wide receiver Jermaine Bishop Jr. offers a different kind of early evidence. Texas credits him with two catches for 25 yards in his collegiate debut against Texas State on September 5; his profile lists one appearance through this review. The old recruiting discussion emphasized his high-school versatility, but the relevant 2026 fact is much narrower: he has made a brief appearance at receiver. Calling him a proven Red River weapon now would outrun the record.
Linebacker Tyler Atkinson also made his debut against Texas State, with one appearance listed on his profile. Quarterback Dia Bell is on the 2026 roster, but his school profile does not list game statistics. Both were prominent signings. Neither profile supports a claim that either will have a substantial October 10 role.
The distinction matters for fans reading game-week coverage. Cooper’s actual carries warrant attention if Texas uses its backfield depth in Dallas. A recruit’s star rating, by itself, is not a basis for predicting a matchup or a snap count.
Oklahoma: the class is a longer-term story so far
Oklahoma’s December release highlighted quarterback Bowe Bentley, running back Jonathan Hatton Jr., and defensive end Jake Kreul among its highly rated signees. Bentley’s and Hatton’s official player pages show no 2026 game statistics at this checkpoint. That absence is not a judgment on their talent; it limits what we can responsibly say about their current contributions.
The school’s September 16 game primer describes fifth-year quarterback John Mateer as the returning starter and lists Bentley among the quarterbacks behind him. It also names freshman Kreul in a defensive-line rotation discussion. That is useful context, but it is not a published depth chart for the Texas game and does not guarantee Kreul will play a particular number of snaps.
Oklahoma’s 24-player signing announcement reflects a class built across positions: 11 offensive players, 12 defensive players, and one specialist. The class may shape the program well beyond this rivalry weekend. For the immediate game, however, the available evidence is much thinner than the December recruiting headlines suggested.
What to watch in Dallas
The most grounded first-year storyline is opportunity, not a winner in a recruiting-rankings contest. Cooper has carried the ball in three Texas games. Bishop and Atkinson have each appeared once in the official profiles reviewed here. Oklahoma’s published materials identify talented freshmen, but the cited pages do not show the same regular-season production for Bentley or Hatton.
Game-day participation may differ from earlier weeks. Watch who actually enters the game and in what situation before drawing conclusions about either class.
